When pupils at Hartington CE Primary School performed the "Story of Tai Chi" for parents, grandparents and friends, there was more to the presentation than just a play.
During the year 2006 as part of the school's anti-bullying initiative the youngsters have been practising this form of protection meditation. Not only that, but next February they are hoping to start an after-school community club offering Tai Chi to all ages, from children five years old through to adults.
Recently the school received its ABC (Anti-Bullying Commitment) Initial Award at a ceremony at County Hall, Matlock, where the children spoke about Tai Chi.
Later Tracy Blackwell, the School's SENCO and Child Protection Officer, told the News Telegraph: "We came across Tai Chi at an anti-bullying conference and I was so taken with it I said to the Head, Ms Gillian Francis, that we really had to do this, and she agreed.
"Each week for an hour, within the curriculum, the children do Tai Chi with The Little Dragons 'Master' Dave Calow and Wendy Calow.
"Through this form of meditation in action the children have become calm and controlled, are focused with raised self esteem and they have a wonderful fitness level and their behaviour is excellent," said Mrs Blackwell.
Now the school is keen for the whole community to benefit from Tai Chi so hopefully in February is to start an after-school community club for anyone aged five years and upwards.
"Through Little Dragons they will be able to learn Tai Chi and relaxation and may go on to Kung Fu and even perhaps out of body meditation, but it will depend how many people are interested and come along," said Mrs Blackwell.
The club will meet in Hartington Village Hall either on Monday or Friday, 6pm to 7pm, depending upon which is most convenient for people. The cost per hourly session will be £2 for children and £2.50 for adults and anyone interested may call 01298-84354 (before the school holidays or after), or email info@hartington.derby

It is hoped that the community club class will work towards the different coloured sashes of the discipline.
"The Story of Tai Chi" as told by the children of Hartington School explained that monks developed this form of meditation as protection from robbers at their isolated temple, after watching the interaction of the different animals.
