Abstract
This paper reports on an experimental
study that examined the effect of a
15-week Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) exercise
programme on the cardiovascular function,
pulmonary function, and shoulder range of motion of persons with lower-limb
disability. The experimental group
comprised 22 people with lower limb disabilities
and a control group of 17
participants.
The experimental group was provided with 30 sessions of TCC
training
while the control
group did not receive any intervention. After 30
sessions of TCC, significant improvements
in shoulder external rotation and
shoulder extension were found among participants of the
experimental group.
Improvements in cardiovascular and pulmonary functions were not
significant.
The investigators concluded that a 15-week TCC programme with mild exercise
could be an effective tool for improving shoulder flexibility and muscle
strength among
sedentary individuals with lower-limb disabilities. Further
research is recommended in
examining the long-term effects of TCC on improving
cardiovascular and respiratory
functions in individuals with lower-limb
disabilities.
